DOCUMENTS:
All cars in Turkey have a set of documents that must be carried in the car at
all times while driving. These documents include the vehicle registration, details
of the owner, proof of minimum traffic insurance and any other insurance if
applicable.
DRIVING LICENSE:
Tourists visiting Turkey for a vacation do not need an international driving
or a translation of their national driving license. The driver of any vehicle
in Turkey must carry a valid driving license at all times while driving.
INSURANCE:
All cars in Turkey must have minimum traffic insurance. All registered carhire
companies offer full vehicle insurance as part of the rental price. Personal
Accident Insurance is not usually included as standard since most tourists are
covered by either their own insurance or their holiday insurance. PAI is available
from most carhire companies at an additional premium on collection of the car.
ACCIDENTS:
In the event of any accident involving damage to a vehicle or injury to people,
the incident must be reported to the local Gendarmerie and the rental company
immediately. In the event of injury to persons and/ or damage to a vehicle,
a police and alcohol report must be obtained for the insurance company. If a
copy of this report is not obtained and submitted to the rental company the
renter could be liable for the full costs of repairs etc.
DRINKING AND DRIVING:
Limits are quite low, so to be on the safe side it is best not to drink alcoholic
drinks at all if you are going to drive. Penalties are severe if you are found
to be over the legal limit. A breath test is routinely carried out by the police
following any traffic accident.
PARKING:
In the main resorts it is best to park in car parks. 'No Parking' or 'Restricted
Parking' signs on the roads are often difficult to decipher or missing altogether.
Missing or not, you still run the risk of a heavy on the spot fine or the car
being towed away if you park in a no parking zone.
SPEED LIMITS:
Speed limit start and finish signs are not always in place, so to be safe stick
to the following maximum speeds, even in the absence of any signs:
· Within the town or city limits, 50Kph, (or as signposted).
· All normal roads outside city limits, including dual carriageways,
90Kph.
· Highways (motorway, autoroute, autobahn), 120Kph.
ROAD SIGNS:
Road signs are standard European design and are reasonably good. There are also
signs to all the main historical sites and places of interest.
DRIVING STANDARDS:
Driving standards in Turkey are generally not very good. Many Turkish drivers
do not know the traffic laws. Providing you bear this in mind, expect to encounter
the unexpected, drive defensively and stay alert to potential situations, you
will encounter few, if any, situations.
ROAD WORKS:
Signposting for road works is not usually very good, so some care is required.
Diversion signs are usually bad, so a map is essential.
HIGHWAY TOLLS:
Most roads in Turkey are toll free, the only exception are highways and the
suspension bridges over the Bosphorus. Tolls are not expensive.
TRAFFIC POLICE:
Traffic security check-points are frequent in Turkey. Check points are set up
at random, usually just over the brow of a hill with little or no warning. So
slow down as best you can and be prepared to stop if requested. Stay in the
car and be ready to show your driving license, the car papers and the car rental
agreement. DO NOT ARGUE, even if you have done nothing wrong, pay any fines
requested and be on your way. Ask for a receipt for any money paid.
TRAFFIC
OFFENCES:
Most traffic offences involving fines are payable on the spot to the police,
don't forget to get a receipt. Traffic fines that are not paid on the spot eventually
find their way to the the tax office where the car is registered, this can take
several months. The terms and conditions of all the rental companies include
the right to charge any fines occurring during the rental period to the credit
card of the renter.
ONE-WAY RENTALS:
One way vehicle rentals are available between most of the major cities. There is drop-off charge for bookings below 21 days.
ADDITIONAL DRIVERS:
Only the driver or drivers included on the rental agreement are insured to drive
the vehicle. A charge is made for each additional driver added to the agreement.
